“If you are a dreamer, come in. If you are a dreamer, a wisher, a liar, a hoper, a prayer, a magic-bean-buyer. If you’re a pretender, come sit by my fire, for we have some flax-golden tales to spin. Come in! Come in!” –Shel Silverstein
Welcome to my blog! I really, truly appreciate that you’ve taken some time out of your day to take a stroll through my brain. I hope you like what you find.
I started this blog for two reasons:
1.) My professors said I should. I’m currently finishing up my BFA in graphic design and advertising. All of the professionals that I’ve talked to said that I need to start branding myself. A lot of design firms and agencies hire based on your personality as much as your portfolio these days. I’m also very interested in copywriting and I wanted to create something to show that I can write. For some samples of my art, please visit my portfolio page.
2.) Quarter-life crisis of epic proportions. I have no idea what my “brand” is and I was feeling like I had lost my perspective on life. Over the past year, my body has turned against me and I have been struggling with a sudden string of medical issues. I was feeling like I had lost control of my life in a big way and I did’t have the first clue on how to get it back. (See my post, The Name of the Beast) Also, in my classes, I was finding that I enjoyed writing snappy headlines and playing with body copy more than I enjoyed actually designing my campaign materials. I found my love of writing reawakening and I needed a place to explore and flesh out this renewed passion. I also desperately needed a place to express and explore other interests and ideas. My blog has been a wonderful creative outlet for me and an incredible journey in self-exploration. It became even more thrilling when I discovered that people wanted to accompany me on that journey. If you are reading this right now, thank you for the company.
Why Perfectly Imperfect?
Because that’s what I am. Ladies and gentlemen, I am flawed. I have more flaws than Swiss cheese has holes. I have some big, beautiful flaws. It took a lot of time, but I have learned that flaws are what make us beautiful. They are what make an individual interesting, compelling, and relatable. Think about one of your favorite fictional characters. Would you like them as much if they were squeaky clean and perfect?
When I started this blog, I really didn’t know what direction it would take. I knew that school said that I should write about design, but I found that over time, my blog started to take on a life of its own. I didn’t start out wanting to write humorous little slice-of-life vignettes, and this whole feminist/general everyday people empowerment/beauty writer stuff just came out of nowhere but I’m loving it and I’m going to run with it. I’ve decided somewhere in this self-discovery process, that I want to lift people up. The world is too full of bad things and negative people and I am going to do my damnedest to be a Wonderbra. I am just one twenty-something who spends way too much time on her laptop, but sometimes one person can make all the difference. If I can make one person smile, chuckle, or feel like they’re not alone, I’ll be happy.
Random tidbits about me:
1.) I am a gianormous nerd. I.e. I have a potentially unhealthy Lord of the Rings obsession.
2.) People-watching is one of my favorite pass-times.
3.) I like to use outdated words and phrases like: Wee bit, gussy up, spiffy, and arse.
4.) I’m an outgoing introvert…as much of an oxymoron as that my be, that’s how I’ve been described and I suppose it works.
5.) I’ll admit to sometimes behaving like an oversized little kid. I like running through the sprinkler, jumping in puddles and watching cartoons. I LOVE mac & cheese! I don’t really want to grow up. Who does?
6.) I am married to a chef. We still eat a lot of Chinese takeout.
7.) I love a good thunderstorm. I think they’re beautiful. I believe that some of the most beautiful things in life are the simplest, the ones that usually go unnoticed.
8.) I love to dance. I love to sing. I hope you aren’t watching.
9.) I wish I had wings.
10.) Driving terrifies me. Seriously. I hate it.
11.) I have an obsession with the color red, especially in the form of shoes and lipstick.
12.) My hair is deep blue.
13.) I adore 50s inspired fashion. Women of the past were so beautiful and classy, but I’m glad to be living in today’s world.
14.) I think children’s books are some of the wisest pieces of literature.
15.) I’m 6’2. I wear heels. Deal with it.
16.) I am enraged by bad typography. Kern your shit, people!
17.) I do judge books by their covers. People are not books.
18.) I adore “ugly” dogs.
19.) I am a classy lady who cusses like a sailor.
